The skin is the largest organ in our body which consists of protein, minerals, lipids, water and chemicals. As we age, our skin shows signs of aging for a number of reasons which we cannot completely prevent from appearing. However there are some steps that help us slow down the process. Some products are available through prescription or can be purchased over the counter which can be effective but their quality and their effectiveness differs from one product to the other. Let us then familiarize ourselves with anti-aging skin care systems.
Skin Care System #1: Retinol
A lot of anti-aging skin care systems have retinol as their ingredient. Retinol is a compound made from vitamin A which acts as an antioxidant. It unites and neutralizes free radicals, the harmful molecules that damage the skin and cause symptoms of aging.
Tretinoin is another compound which is nearly like retinol but it is more potent and is only available via prescription.
Skin Care System #2: Hydroxy Acids
Hydroxy acid is another compound in anti-aging skin care systems. Although these acids have different chemical forms which are commonly termed as alpha-, beta-, and poly-hydroxy acids, all of them have the same properties.
Hydroxy acids are used to exfoliate the surface of the skin, allowing a newer and younger skin to grow. Because the use of these products can make you sensitive to sunlight, you must always wear sunscreen after using anti-aging skin care systems that contain hydroxy acids.
Skin Care System #3: Other Substances
Besides retinol and hydroxyl acids, there are also other compounds that are found in anti-aging skin care systems. Coenzyme Q10 is a nutrient that promotes production of energy and helps skin cells repair themselves. Copper peptides are small proteins combined with copper which helps break down collagen that contribute to wrinkles, into smaller bits of collagen so as to make the skin smoother. Kinetin and tea extracts are other ingredients in anti aging skin care systems and both work as antioxidants.
Skin Care System #4: Prevention
The most important thing to consider in an anti-aging akin-treatment program is to prevent further damage. According to Mayo Clinic, avoiding the sun from 10AM-4PM lessens sun damage. Always wear sun block with UVA and UVB protection whenever you’re under the sun. Another way to prevent skin aging is eating a well balanced and healthy diet and drinking plenty of water. Minimizing stress can make your skin stay young.
Skin Care System #5: Cleanse, Tone, Moisturize
Cleveland Clinic recommends cleaning the skin two times a day as part of an anti-aging routine. Choose a cleanser that fits your skin type. After cleansing, use a toner to remove left residues and you also need to apply moisturizers everyday even if you have an oily skin. An oil-free moisturizer works best for oily skin. Moisturizers must also contain anti-aging ingredients.
It is important to decide whether you use an anti-aging skin care system that can be purchased over-the-counter or through prescription. Prescription systems have higher doses of active ingredients and are known to be more effective. You must also consider the cost. An expensive one does not mean it has a higher quality. Remember that systems require daily use for weeks before result will be visible.
